We live in very challenging times, with businesses hitting rock bottom, people losing jobs, pay cuts etc and we are always seemed to be stretched. It is precisely in these times that we need to rally around each other and there is no better way than standing up for one another and empowering others.
Give a man a fish and you give him a meal and teach a man to fish and you teach him to earn a living. This Chinese proverb is more relevant to all of us working in the social sector in these tough times. In many ways it is the need of the hour and a grim reminder of the disparity in our society today and points towards the need for skill based-training for livelihood.
In this back drop, the Salesians are inspired to continue to serve society having been in the forefront providing relief and sustenance to the poor and the marginalized that were badly impacted by the Covid pandemic. In Bangalore alone the Catholic institutions distributed over 1 lakh relief kits to the needy.
While providing relief in the Lingarajapuram, Janakiram Layout, Kachakarnahalli areas surrounding the Don Bosco parish it was evident that many had lost their livelihood and driven to poverty. One factor that was common among all of them is that although many of them were able bodied they did not have the necessary skills to take up new jobs.
Thus the seeds of a cooperative model of Women for Women were sown in the Don Bosco Church Lingarajapuram. A group of women came together who are educated, talented, and hardworking but lacked any formal skill based training and the way forward is to conduct courses in Fashion Design, Beautician, and set up a production unit for hands on experience and income generation.
To empower women with skills and help them to be self reliant and independent.
Vision is to train about 300 women every year for the next 3 years imparting skills in diverse areas such as fashion design, beauticians and so on true to the saying “Empower a Woman and you empower a family”
